Agincourt Reef is not one reef but a chain of ribbon reefs, and it sits roughly 70 kilometres offshore from the Queensland coast. Ribbon reefs are rare.
Only about ten of them exist along the entire Great Barrier Reef, all clustered at the northern end where the continental shelf narrows and the seabed falls away into the Coral Sea.
